So we start with a delay and apparently EDM is preferred to giant taiko drums. Who knew?

We’ll start with the over 99kg and then working our way down to the lower weight classes and then start the women’s division. When that is complete we start over again with the male HWs for the quarters.

SuperFight 1
6min match with overtime.
Didn’t get the names of this first round special match. Red vs Black is how we’ll call it based on rashguards. Black gets ahold of Reds legs and Red defends by posting on the head. Black keeps pressure on Red’s legs and passes to cross side as he starts to work the far arm of Red. red sits up to escape, transitions and black stays on top. Red gets to all fours but has his neck caught and taps. It should probably be mentioned these two athletes have some paralysis in their legs. Apologies for not getting their names as they were not announced.

Dean Lister vs Lee Hyoung of Paraestra
Dean grabs a leg and sits to deep half. Glover cornering Dean. Reset and Dean attacks a leglock that’s defended and Dean ends up on the bottom. Dean playing it cool. Dean playing half sometimes with knee in the hip sometimes traditional half. Glover calling to Dean to sweep when points start. Dean easily goes to butterfly then closed guard. Double under passes aren’t working on Dean. Dean gets a short armbar marcelo style!

Orlando Sanchez vs Janne Pekka
Big O on top in top half. Orlando loses half and ends in closed guard. Triangle attempt from John and Orlando passes to side control. Jumps to the other side and keeps top side. Orlando gets to crucifix on top and wins with a shoulder lock by the legs, beautiful technique.

Vinny Maghales and Paul Ardilla
Vinny gets taken down with an ankle pic, could concede. Vinny gets a leglock, heelhook according to Jake but looked almost like a kneebar from the corner of the screen.

Cavaca vs Hideki
Hideki tries an atomic butt drop pass. Cavaca playing seated guard. Cavaca playing a loose open half, no doubt looking for legs. Cavaca sitting up and laying back with little action. Hideki stands as Cavaca scoots forward for a leg. Hideki playing back aware of Cavaca’s skill with leglocks. Cavaca diving in for a kneebar and comes on top for a sweep while keep the leg, almost gets a heel hook position but prefers to keep the top and attempts to pass half. Hideki goes to a deep half.

Jared Dopp vs Gabriel
Starts fast and gets the clinch working on an arm. Both men happy to wrestle.

Arthilero vs Lucio
Arthilero is a greco and judo champ so he’s happy to play standing. Pink tights seem to be working for his opponent. We switch to Dopp’s match.

—————————–
Annnnd we’re back, sorta.
We join Hideki and Cavaca standing. They tie up and grind foreheads a bit. Cavaca almost gets the back off a scramble/possible guard pull attempt by Hideki. Refs confer and give Cavaca the decision. He’ll meet Dopp later today.

Assis sprawls off a quick attempt. Assis wins.

Felipe Pena vs Tussa
Pena reaping the knee and trapping an ankle. Pena keeps Alencar off balance. He keeps attacking the legs and gets to a calf slice position. Funky leg entanglement. I’m sure there’s a 10thplanet name for it, maybe the hydroponic popper or something. Pena content to hunt leglocks working to a outside reap. Pena goes to a belly down ankle lock which is defended. Pena continues to attack that footlock. Tussa grabbing the head kills some space but can’t get past Preguicas Legs. They get to standing and Pena jumps to get some back control before they hit the mat and he falls to guard. they reset to the center. Felipe continues to attack the legs.

We stay wrestling. Alencar shooting an armdrag but is defended. Preguica gets around to the back but can’t get the takedown, tries to get control, one hook standing. Felipe takes the win.

Joao gets to the back and goes for a rear naked and gets on top of mount. Joao keeping pressure on top from side control and some knee on hip/belly. Why we lose this match as Gabriel is rolling out of a heel hook attempt to get to Joao Assis standing is confusing. Joao and Abraham will meet in the 1/4s. They are good friends and teammates.
————————————————-
Dopp on top and the match ends with Dopp winning.

Adam gets bonus points for coming out looking like a red zebra of doom. He gets taken down and guard passed by Rodolfo. Denny Prokopos cornering Adam encouraging him to recompose guard. Rodolfo is forced back to butterfly. Adam has an overhook with his right arm. Rodolfo trying to pass jumping side to side. Amazing movement for such a big guy. Rodolfo pushing strong pressure elevating the elbows away from the body and into ¾ mount. Rodolfo with intense pressure but can’t free his foot. He isolates an arm and has a head and arm briefly from mount but Adam pushes him back to half. Rodolfo gives up the choke but moves to full mount. Rodolfo gets to one side and exerts amazing pressure for a head and arm choke victory.

Jason vs Hector
Hector looks like he’s fresh off a 1980s breakdancing competition. Rector attacking a kimura and then sits to an armbar attempt. Loses it and ends up attempting to pass butterfly. Missing a lot of this in favor of Rodolfo’s match with Adam. Hector on top of half. Hector wins and advances to meet Xande in the Quarters.

Lovato Jr. vs Hidemi
Lovato back to action after a torn pec. He is on top and using his patented pressure passing moving to 3/4mount. Starts to attack a kimura by standing his free leg up but gives it up and takes full mount. From mount Rafael works to separate the elbows, or Opening the elbow as Ryan Hall would say. Keenan with a good double grip on one arm, some inversion but we’re back to squared up and Jesse attempting the pass. Keenan close to sitting up for a double leg attempt but sits back. Start with some wrestling. Sousa and AJ both warned for unsportsmanlike behavior, I’d call it spirited sportsmanship. Sousa attacks a heel hook, uses his foot to kick off the chest of Sousa. Sousa content with sitting to guard. AJ trying to pass. AJ stands back and wipes his eye from a possible inadvertent poke. AJ tries to jump past the guard, they end up standing and AJ sits to guard. Garry vs Lepri Complete
Originally I had a computer issue. Going back to fix the pbp.

We start with Lepri on top of Garry’s half guard. Garry likes to play a loose half and even allows opponents positions that more would think are dangerous. While many know Garry for his footlocks his Mata Leo, Kimura and armbars are excellent as well. Lepri is a multiple time champion who many grapplers consider an underrated legend. We’re back to standing as Lepri couldn’t pass Garry’s guard and Garry was unable to get underneath Lucas or get another attack. Garry shoots a single leg and Lepri tries to snatch a kimura. We end up back standing. Garry looks to get under the legs and pulls half which Lepri gets past. Garry inverts and scoops up a knee and looks to establish his half. We stand back up. When he feels his feet are safe he pressures Garry’s half and dives for a kimura grip from half. Garry is out. Lucas attempts a duck under and Garry rolls out, reguards and attempts a short armbar. Lucas defends and pressures Garry’s half attacking a kimura grip. Garry defends. Lucas still on top half. Alternating to fellow NYer Eddie Cummings and Tanquinho’s match. Grippo still on the bottom as Cobrinha passes to side. Match ends with Cobrinha on the back of Grippo. Couldn’t see if he had hooks or not. Cobrinha wins in overtime against a very game Grippo.

Edward Cummings vs Augusto Tanquinho Mendes
Eddie Cummings shoots a heel hook from butterfly, Tanquinho defends and Eddie triangles the legs, Tanq gets to standing. Eddie looking to get under Mr. Dern, kidding, Tanquinho. Tanq has been fighting MMA and doesn’t appear to have lost a step defending the leg attacks of Cummings. Eddie staying on the attacks. They are close to the edge but eddie works to push forward while attacking the legs. Tanq is up and Eddie finds that space to slip under for another attempt. More spinning than a tasmanian devil on crack from Tanq. But the defense is solid and he pressures the guard of Cummings. Eddie relentless on the leg attacks. Tanq keeping the pressure on Cummings head. When Eddie does get under Tanq, the pressure comes on his foot and he stands. Eddie answers by more pressure and staying on his grips. Tanq in and out with his pressure. Cummings switching grips and trying to get a secondary or tertiary attack going. Eddie now turtled/inverting/ looking to take the knee as he has the bottom underhook on Tanquinho’s quad. Transitions between these leglocks will be like crack for the breakdown footage folks like Scout. Tanquinho’s leglock defense is amazing. They head to overtime. Eddie’s playing half butterfly. Tanq staying back. Pases to half. Eddie reaping with his left leg. Turns for the heelhook with a high chin to shoulder grip on the foot. Tanquinho pressuring the head of Cummings. Eddie trying for the short armbar he shoots when his head gets grabbed. Great balance of attacks with footlocks and armlocks. Tanquinho not concerned with any attack so he keeps the pressure and comes forward but Eddie recomposes and gets back to guard. More pressure on Cummings from Mendes. Eddie may surprise him with a sweep or sit up attempt but instead stays attacking leglocks. Mendes heavy on the knee pressure forward and grips on Eddie’s head. Tanquinho will win. He faces Cobrinha in the next round.

Jeff Glover vs Geo up next. Dueling Donkey Guards to start. Glover dives forward. This is a circus match . Going to be fun. Geo hunting for something from a front headlock position but spins to the back. Dives on Glover’s arm for a kimura grip. Glover defending. Funky position ensues. Between the yellow mats, Geo’s green hair and Glover’s radical shorts I feel like I spent a weekend with Nic Gregoriades. Glover now on a toehold and switches to a heel hook both defended by Geo who is hunting for his Truck grips. Geo up. Reset to the center with Geo attempting to pass. Glover rocking and rolls grabbing a foot. Geo splits the uprights and Glover is speaking in a few octaves higher than normal. Injury time. Restart with geo trying to pass. Scramble and Glover shoots his patented M’arce. Geo on top defending as Glover is tightening it. Glover is on the bottom with a strong attempt but Geo passed. Geo trying to roll for the Truck, Glover aware of it and they’re rolling like a weekend at EDM. Geo has Glover’s leg trapped in a calf slice position but both men are up and not pressured. Transition ends with Geo attempting to Twister Glover. Glover well aware and is defending Geo’s grips. El Jefe escapes the twister INTO a triangle of his own. Geo lifts and could slam but Glover hooks the leg. Glover still on the triangle as Geo tries to staack forward. Geo defending longer than most would expect. Hard to see the far side, Glover switches to a gable grip around his far knee, Geo takes that opportunity for a small slam. Glover gets lifted High above Geo and slammed ala Arona/Rampage. Budo Jake reports that Glover was actually KO’d yet they keep going. WTF? They two did pause and appeared to say something to each other but kept going. Geo attacking a d’arce and Glover defends. Glover not looking his playful self. Time ends. Jeff slow to get up. 10th PLanet cheering Geo bows to Glover who still is not up. When Jeff gets up he claps for Geo. Geo gets the win. They hug it out. Hoping El Jefe is not hurt. Props to both men.

Davi Ramos advances.

Sousa beats Rocha by judges decision.

Break for the super fights
Legend’s match.
ze Mario vs Liborio
Liborio coming out with the Carlson Bulldogs on his trunks. Ze Mario on Liborio’s head as they pummel for grips. Mario shrugging off the bearded attack of his old training partner turned opponent. The crowd is into this one. Let’s pause for a moment to remember the legacy of Carlson Gracie. . . The Carlson Gracie Academy just recently closed its doors ending a chapter of jiu jitsu history. Back to these two former CGT stars. Lots of wrestling from the clinch and being reset. Liborio gets the better of an exchange and drives Ze Mario off the mat and the crowd gets loud. ATT vs BTT has been all standing so far. The Zen Machine staying in the zone as both men are locking eyes when they lock up. The taller Sperry hanging on the head of the bearded technician that is Liborio. De la Riva and Murilo Bustamante helped prep Liborio for this match against their former team leader. No guard pulling for these living legends. Liborio not afraid to get a grip on Ze’s neck with his open hand. We’re still battling standing with neither man gaining any real advantage. Liborio with a Toquinho like slap on the back of the Zen Machine’s head. More hand fighting and resets. The Carlson Bulldogs on the front of Liborio’s shorts face Mario in an almost mocking way. Liborio gets caught in a front head lock but gets out and almost has a reversal of his own, again we’re at a draw. If you’re a fan of either you would want to say your man has been the aggressor but it’s been pretty back and forth. Liborio pushing into the leaning Sperry. We need this to be rematched in the Gi at the Master’s and Seniors World’s here in Vegas. If you visit Las Vegas be sure to stop by where Mario Sperry does when he’s in town to train, Sergio Penha’s Art of Jiu Jitsu in Las Vegas’ Chinatown. Sergio has coached Mario throughout his grappling career. We break for the round.

Round Two of Ze Mario Sperry and Ricardo Liborio
RIP Carlson Gracie Sr. Thank you for all you did for jiu jitsu. Now to round two of what CGT members might call, The Battle for Top Creonte.
More of the same to start. Both legends lock up and repeat the tactics of the first round. You know you’re a modern grappler if you’re yelling, “Sit them down!” at your screen. Old School you don’t sit down. So we’re back to jiu jitsu wrestling. Liborio with a C grip into Mario’s throat answered by Mario’s pressure on Liborio’s head. Liborio is the one the keeps coming forward but it’s not like Mario isn’t engaged. One minute left and nothing has happened in terms of score. It’s been a battle of clinching. They return to their corners as time runs out. We head to overtime.

Rd 3
They shake hands and guess what, continue to wrestle. This time we’re turned up to 11 and Liborio forces a sprawl from Mario which he spins out of and takes a turn to the back as it’s restarted in the center. Boos from the crowd over either the grips Mario has or the fact they’re stood back up. More aggression from both men in this battle of Carlson students. Liborio’s near double leg attempts are met with near front headlocks in this game of inches. Wrestlers are polishing their soapboxes and Liborio attempts a footsweep. He then shoots a single and is defended leaving us with a tease to the ground but we stay standing. Mario with a bounce in his step almost takes a front headlock to the ground but can’t finish. We’ve got more resets than my old Nintendo. The crowd is on their feet for the decision…Ricardo Liborio takes the superfight win!
